Running a blog involves far more than writing. Research, social posts, replying to comments, checking rankings and updating old posts can take more time than the articles themselves. Much of that work follows the same steps every time, which makes it perfect for automation.
Here are five AI automation workflows you can build in n8n, with the building blocks for each. They also work in Make or Zapier with small changes. Not sure which tool to use? See n8n vs Zapier vs Make.
Before you start
- An n8n account (Cloud) or a self-hosted instance
- An API key for an AI model (OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini)
- Access to your WordPress site, ideally with an Application Password for the REST API
- A Google account for Sheets
Golden rule: automate the busywork, not your judgment. Every workflow below keeps you in control of what gets published.
Workflow 1: Weekly topic research digest
What it does: collects new articles from sources in your niche, uses AI to cluster them into topics, and emails you a shortlist of post ideas every Monday.
Nodes:
- Schedule Trigger: every Monday at 8 AM
- RSS Read: pull feeds from 5 to 10 trusted sites in your niche
- Filter: keep items from the last 7 days
- AI model node: group items into themes and suggest 5 post angles your audience would search for
- Gmail or Email: send the digest to yourself
Why it helps: you stop scrolling for ideas and start each week with a researched list.
Workflow 2: Content brief generator
What it does: when you add a keyword to a Google Sheet, it creates a structured content brief: search intent, suggested headings, questions to answer and internal link ideas.
Nodes:
- Google Sheets Trigger: new row with a keyword
- HTTP Request: fetch your existing post list from the WordPress REST API
- AI model node: write the brief and suggest which existing posts to link
- Google Docs or Sheets: save the brief and mark the row as done
Why it helps: you write faster with a clear outline, and internal linking stops being an afterthought. The brief is a starting point; your experience and examples make the post worth ranking.
Workflow 3: Auto-draft social posts when you publish
What it does: when a post goes live, it drafts platform-specific captions for LinkedIn, X and Facebook and sends them to you for approval.
Nodes:
- Webhook or WordPress Trigger: fires on post publish (or poll the REST API for new posts)
- AI model node: write three captions in different styles with relevant hashtags
- Telegram or Slack: send drafts to you with approve buttons
- Social media nodes: post the approved version
Why it helps: every post gets promoted consistently without you rewriting captions each time.
Workflow 4: Comment and contact form triage
What it does: sorts new comments and contact form messages into questions, leads, spam and complaints, and alerts you only for the ones that matter.
Nodes:
- Webhook: receive Contact Form 7 submissions, or poll new comments via the REST API
- AI model node or Text Classifier: label each message
- Switch: route by label
- Telegram or Email: instant alert for leads and complaints; a daily summary for questions
- Google Sheets: log everything
Why it helps: potential clients get a fast reply, and you stop missing important messages among spam.
Workflow 5: Weekly SEO report from Search Console
What it does: pulls your Google Search Console data every week, highlights pages gaining or losing clicks, and suggests which posts to update.
Nodes:
- Schedule Trigger: every Friday
- HTTP Request: Search Console API, comparing the last 7 days with the previous 7 (requires Google OAuth setup)
- Code node: calculate changes per page
- AI model node: summarise the biggest movers and suggest likely reasons and next actions
- Email: send the report
Why it helps: you catch falling pages early and know exactly which posts to refresh. Pair it with our checklist on ranking in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Tips for reliable workflows
- Add error alerts: use n8n’s Error Trigger to notify you when a workflow fails.
- Keep humans in the loop: require approval before anything is published or sent to readers.
- Control AI costs: use smaller, cheaper models for classification and summaries.
- Store secrets safely: keep API keys in n8n credentials, never inside nodes or shared screenshots.
- Start with one workflow: get it stable for a week before building the next.
What not to automate
Avoid workflows that publish AI-written posts automatically. Search engines and ad networks look for helpful, original content, and mass-produced posts with no human input can hurt your rankings and your AdSense approval. Use automation to save time on research, promotion and admin, then put that time into better writing.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need coding skills for these workflows?
No for workflows 1 to 4. Workflow 5 uses a small Code node and Google API setup, which is manageable with a tutorial.
How much does it cost to run them?
Self-hosted n8n costs only the server. AI API usage for these workflows is usually small for a single blog, but set a monthly spending limit in your AI provider’s dashboard.
Can I sell these workflows as a freelance service?
Yes. Many bloggers and small businesses pay for setup and maintenance. A working demo of these five is a strong portfolio piece.
